The Life and Times of the Company Secretary

Hiya

Thought I would give you all a little insight into the role I have within the group.

I am Secretary which has lots of different responsibilities, I am the co-ordinator of the many members of the team organising venues, booking shows, writing letters to cast and crew, liaison with external people like investors in children and NODA. I arrange all our meetings, pull together the agenda and minute the discussions that we have. Ensuring we remain planned is an important part of the role of the Secretary; this means that when you are all rehearsing for one show I am looking at booking venues and rights for the next show (Five Guys has been in the planning phase for over a year). I am the link for our venues, theatres and the school in which we rehearse. I also arrange our CRB checks to make sure you are all kept safe and well. I am also often involved in the occasional complaint or letters of praise and the responses required.

More recently I have been involved in supporting and running workshops, not being the greatest singer or dancer in the world I avoid this kind of area but as part of my normal day job is public speaking and training have been involved in modules linked to poetry and acting. I also enjoy the costume modules during which we have had some great fun.

My other hat is that of Costume Co-ordinator. Be under no illusion I do not do all of the costumes myself, I often have help from other members of the committee to pull together the finishing touches, search for important materials and costumes to ensure that when you lot get on that stage your costumes match the storyline and also your needs. Where possible the best costumes are the ones you have designed or helped to make.

My motivation for doing all of the work with SYTG is the young people, the pride of knowing when those young talented people get on that stage and entertain an audience is second to none. My own children attend the group but when I sit in that audience and watch a cast that I have been involved with which makes them all mine. For those who were with us for Les Mis – the curtain went up and I began crying tears of joy and didn’t stop until an hour after it was finished!

I am really looking forward to seeing Five Guys and beyond.
